Comments on the “KPS Physics Camp for High School Girl Students”

The Women in Physics Committee of KPS annually organized physics camp for high school girl students since the summer of 2002. The aim of this camp is to give them an opportunity to do work and interact with working physicists and enhance smart girl networking.
The KPS physics camps have been successful in terms of attracting many enthusiastic girl students and enhancing their interests in physics. Also, Korean physics community became to notice the importance of this kind of activity. To draw many girl students in various regions of the country, the KPS co-organized physics camp with the WISE (Women into Science and Engineering) center, which has a network system between girl students interested in science and mathematics. Also from 2004 to 2006, ASML Trust supported the summer camp.
Physics summer camp for high school girl students successfully provided high school girl students with valuable experiences to do work and interact with working physicists and thereby enhance smart girl network system. The program processed with two parts. At the first part, teams consisting of three to four students visited excellent physics research laboratories in universities and research institutes located in diverse parts over Korea. They explored what’s going on in each laboratory and executed some basic experiments at hands. In the mean time, high school girls could meet working physicists and get a deep touch with science itself. The second part consists of on-site camp where they made oral and poster presentations about what they learned and what they did in the laboratories they visited. Their presentations were evaluated and outstanding teams are awarded. Also the champion team of 2004 Physics camp was given the privilege to have a study trip to Netherlands and to participate in the Launching Conference of World Physics Year 2005, which was held in January in UNESCO, Paris.
